There are numerous styles of fencing available. Modern fencing such as lap panels or close board fencing are functional, cheap and therefore very popular. Other styles range from old-fashioned post and rail fencing made from chestnut pales to woven willow hurdles crafted by coppice workers. I have constructed interesting bespoke fences using reclaimed floorboards from clients’ houses. I also make trellis panels in house as I find the ones bought from the DIY stores are very badly made.
As important as the fence barrier itself is the fence post! A fence will only be as strong as the post and it must be dropped in the ground as deep as reasonably possible. Typically I will dig a hole 1ft wide by 2.5ft deep and fill in with wet, sloppy concrete to help find its way into all sides of the hole.
